Towaoc, as a young child, is nursed back to health by Father Miguel, the priest at the Spanish settlement near the base of the Wahatoya Mountains in southern Colorado, near the present day town of LaVeta. Towaoc was kidnapped from his Jicarilla Apache camp, and nearly killed, by Ute braves, who then traded him to Miguel for a lame horse. Sai΄-ar, the Ute medicine woman, helps with Towaoc’s healing and becomes his surrogate Ute grandmother.
